SNAP-8, commonly identified as Acetyl Octapeptide-3, is a highly concentrated cosmetic peptide used in advanced face, eye and expression-line formulations. It is suited to lightweight serums, gels, eye products and creams intended to improve the visible appearance of fine lines and create a smoother-looking complexion.

SNAP-8 powder is far more concentrated than many commercially supplied peptide solutions. Percentages recommended for pre-diluted solutions must therefore not be copied directly when formulating with 99% powder. Commercial peptide ingredients may contain only a small proportion of active peptide and are commonly recommended according to their supplied dilution rather than their pure active content.

Common cosmetic applications

  • Expression-line serums
  • Eye creams and eye gels
  • Forehead and targeted-treatment products
  • Anti-ageing moisturisers
  • Multi-peptide face serums
  • Lightweight gel formulations

Suggested development range

Because this is concentrated powder, begin with low active levels:

  • 0.005–0.02% for initial laboratory development
  • 0.02–0.05% for concentrated formulations
  • Concentrations above this range should only be used when supported by the supplier’s technical documentation and completed safety and stability testing

Do not automatically formulate pure SNAP-8 powder at the same percentage used for a commercial SNAP-8 solution.

Example calculations

30 g serum at 0.01%

  • SNAP-8 powder: 0.003 g
  • Remaining serum base: 29.997 g

This quantity requires a highly accurate analytical balance. A stock solution is normally easier to measure.

100 g serum at 0.02%

  • SNAP-8 powder: 0.02 g
  • Remaining formulation: 99.98 g

1 kg cream at 0.05%

  • SNAP-8 powder: 0.50 g
  • Remaining formulation: 999.50 g

Recommended stock-solution method

Preparing a stock solution improves measuring accuracy.

Example 1% SNAP-8 stock solution

To prepare 100 g:

  • SNAP-8 powder: 1 g
  • Distilled or deionised water: 99 g

To obtain the following active concentrations in a finished 100 g product:

Desired pure SNAP-8 level Amount of 1% stock solution
0.005% 0.5 g
0.01% 1 g
0.02% 2 g
0.05% 5 g

Subtract the stock solution from the formulation’s total water phase.

A water-based stock solution requires a suitable cosmetic preservation system. Unless preservation and microbial stability have been confirmed, prepare only a small quantity for immediate formulation work.

Mixing instructions

  1. Accurately weigh the powder or measured stock solution.
  2. Dissolve the powder in distilled or deionised water.
  3. Stir gently until fully dissolved.
  4. Add during the final cool-down stage below approximately 35–40°C.
  5. Mix gently and avoid prolonged high-shear processing.
  6. Confirm the final pH, clarity, colour and stability.
  7. Package in a clean, airtight and light-protective container.

Important formulation notice

These powders are concentrated raw cosmetic ingredients and are not finished consumer products. They should not be applied directly to the skin or scalp.

Every finished formulation should undergo:

  • Stability and compatibility testing
  • Preservative efficacy testing where water is present
  • Microbiological assessment
  • Packaging compatibility testing
  • Final cosmetic safety assessment
  • Patch testing before broader use

Use appropriate protective equipment when handling concentrated powders and avoid inhalation, eye contact and contamination. Keep sealed, dry and protected from heat and direct lig
